Prince Jamir vs DJ Premier: Hip-hop’s Social Media Generation Mashes-Up A Soulful Landmine

Brooklyn-based artist, Prince Jamir, takes the legendary DJ Premier head on with help from the1shanti aka India Bambaataa and J.J. Brown via his new release, Prince Jamir vs DJ Premier, available FREE at www.princejamir.com

Brooklyn, New York – Prince Jamir has arrived in the age of social media technology and mash-up culture, where young music lovers have developed their pop culture references via a steady stream of FREE downloadable mixtapes containing mashed-up music from yesteryear blended with the stylings of tomorrow’s hit makers. Skillful producers and DJs have teamed up in order to usher in a new wave of talent which, until recently, have gone overlooked by major labels and mainstream media. The new rules are simple: Rewards are reaped by those who take part in high value concept-based art which is spread relentlessly on a grass roots level.

In the case of Brooklyn native, Prince Jamir, being enlisted by Bengali-American producer/artist, Nathan “the1shanti” Laskar, to pay homage to legendary hip-hop and R&B producer, DJ Premier, is just the project to help tip the scales in his favor. “For most music lovers,” says Laskar, “we are aware that the sound we have come to embrace as hip-hop has been vastly shaped by DJ Premier…you see the ripple effect at festivals such as Rock the Bells where almost every act has collaborated with Primo.” With that sentiment in mind, he set out to pair Premier’s greatest beats with a soul singing up-and-comer who could rise to the challenge of matching the gritty undertones of New York, which Premier’s music evokes during the listening experience. “My studio space is raw and concrete with a bunch of gear thrown in it,” says Laskar, “Prince Jamir plugged a hand-held mic into my mixing board and freestyled the entire project…that’s what I was looking for, a strong soul singer who could convey emotion but think like a rapper and wouldn’t ask for autotune.”

The project’s finishing touches arrived upon Laskar having garnered the approval of legendary DJ, Kool DJ Red Alert, who stepped in the studio to record the introduction. Kool DJ Red Alert ushered in hip-hop’s first commercial airplay during his tenure at KISS FM in New York City in the art’s early days. “We could have simply stopped at Primo,” remarks Laskar, “but for me, it’s always important to receive the blessings of our culture’s forefathers.” To tie the project’s concept together, Laskar enlisted the team of DJ/producer, J.J. Brown and engineer Dan “The Deacon” Maier of 5G Productions to mix the tracks together.
